1975 Baseball Replay

OK, this has taken me forever, but in what little spare time I have, I'm doing a replay of the 1975 season, both AL & NL. I'll post highlights from games, and even occasionally make up quotes. Basically, it's for the handful of people who care, and for me to have fun with.

5/3/75 DET @ BOS

The Tigers fell to 4-19 following their 3-2 loss to Boston. I can honestly say Detroit didn’t play poorly. Granted, Lerrin LaGrow’s 2 wild pitches in the third inning wasn’t real impressive (that was Boston’s 2nd run), but each time Boston scored, they managed to tie the game up a couple innings later. Well, except for that 3rd run. But I have to say that holding the Red Sux to 3 runs while playing in Fenway was something to be proud of.

The problem for the Tigers continues to be their atrocious offense. Their leading hitter at this point is Ben Oglivie, and he’s hitting all of .264. And I mean he’s leading ALL hitters. There’s not even a guy who’s managed to go 3-10 on the season. This game, they only managed 6 hits (which did include a double from Oglivie and a triple from Leon Roberts) and a hit batter (Willie Horton). Yet despite this, they had a chance to tie the game.

Oglivie led off the 9th with his double. Bill Freehan grounded out to short, but didn’t advance the runner. Ben did go to third when Jim Rice dropped a routine fly in left, allowing Dan Meyer to reach first. With the infield drawn in, Aurelio Rodriguez hit a one hopper to short to start a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. In hindsight, I wish I had let Meyer try to steal 2nd, either on his own or as part of a double steal.

For Boston, Rice homered in the first. Fred Lynn went 2-3 with a double, and Cecil Cooper went 2-4. Reggie Cleveland went 8 innings, giving up 2 runs while striking out 7 for the win. Dick Drago pitched the ninth for his 3rd save.
